Advanced Cosmetic Surgery

By

No matter how confident many of us seem, in the back of our minds there is often that nagging feeling that I would look perfect if only I would change my ________. You should take solace to know that you are most certainly not alone. Every year thousands of people go under the knife to perfect those nagging flaws. There are times when cosmetic surgery is strictly superficial; however, advanced cosmetic surgery can help to rebuild not only your body, but also your self confidence in the event of a deforming accident or medical issue.

Types of Cosmetic Surgery

The quest for physical perfection has been a pervading theme within society for eons. Sushruta Samhita, thought to be the father of cosmetic surgery published his writings as far back as 2000 BC. Vanity has been present in our culture dating back as far as written records have been kept. The first written reference to rhinoplasty (nose job) was recorded in “Gentlemen’s Magazine” back in 1794, when colonists recorded incidents of Native Americans performing rhinoplasty on their tribe members. Like anything, with time comes innovation. Over the course of the past three centuries the technology and know how in the medical profession has improved steadily to bring you to present time where advanced cosmetic surgery is commonplace. In today’s world of complex medical procedures cutting edge technology is helping to keep us looking and feeling as though we were still in our twenties. Cosmetic surgery is a multi billion dollar industry that has been thriving in not only America but all over the world.

Thirty years ago the prospects for plastic reconstructive surgery were limited at best. Doctors were in the beginning stages of really understanding and perfecting the best processes for advanced cosmetic surgery. Certain procedures were more commonplace than others such as rhinoplasty (commonly referred to as a nose job) or mammoplasty (or breast augmentation). These procedures were becoming more socially acceptable and over time would become as routine as getting your wisdom teeth pulled. Today, most cosmetic procedures can be done on an outpatient basis requiring little, to no recovery time and minimal discomfort. However, there are a variety of advanced cosmetic surgery procedures that require significantly more recovery time and disruption to your daily life. Abdominoplasty (commonly called a Tummy Tuck) and Rhytidectomy (or face lift) are two of the more advanced cosmetic procedures that can require many hours of surgery as well as a painful recovery, not to mention some serious scars. When undergoing such procedures it is important to interview your physician to verify that they have a proven track record of success in your chosen surgery, having performed them routinely throughout the year. Verify that the physician is board certified and credentialed to work in an accredited hospital or surgery center. When it comes to your body you may not get a “second chance” so it is important to find the right doctor for you so that you can be 100% confident in your decision to undergo surgery.

Risks of Advanced Cosmetic Surgery

Advanced cosmetic surgery is not without its side effects, most notably, death. We often push the thought of our own mortality out of our collective consciousness; however, when taking part in advanced cosmetic surgery the likely hood of death is a very real consequence. Logically, the more complex the procedure the more risk you are taking. There are; however, other risk factors affecting your survival rate, existing illness, age and weight/obesity can all play a role in your survival. Not all surgeries are as perilous, with the most common side affects to advanced cosmetic surgery are bruising, swelling, and discoloration of the surgery site. Depending on the nature of the operation, you may also have to contend with significant scarring and open wounds/sutures. In all reality, the majority of surgeries can be performed with little to no complication; however, not bringing up the consequences may be the biggest disservice of all.

Advanced cosmetic surgery is something thousands of people experience each year. The vast majority of the people get through this experience with little to no hardship. The potential for serious side affects are there; however, you need to weigh out your options and find the best surgeon for you. Traveling outside of your comfort zone may be what’s needed to insure that you get the best surgical care available. Put the same amount of time in finding your plastic surgeon as you would in buying a new car or home.
