Female Car Insurance – Do Women Pay Less?

If you are a female car insurance is probably going to be a little more affordable for you than it might be for your male counterparts. Despite the fact that there are thousands of jokes about women drivers (and you have probably heard plenty of them yourself) statistics actually show that women are better and safer drivers than men are (sorry to burst that bubble guys) and so therefore in the eyes of the car insurance companies at least women are a better car insurance risk and can be offered lower premiums than men even if they are driving the same make and model of car.

Of course not all women are excellent drivers and not all men are incapable of driving as carefully or as safely as their female friends and relatives. There are indeed ladies who love to speed and take risks like texting while driving and there are plenty of men who always stick to the posted speed limits and would never dream of talking on a cellphone while they drive. However no car insurance company can come out and access the driving skills of each individual –male or female – that they sell a policy to so they have to go with those averages and national statistics.

And what are those statistics that make female car insurance less expensive on average? Various studies have shown that male drivers are twice as likely to be involved in a serious or fatal car accident than female drivers are and also that there are more women drivers on the road without a blemish on their driving record than there are men with clean licenses. Women are also less likely to commit “vehicle related” crimes and if they are involved in an accident there is usually less damage and fewer injuries.

Of course gender is only one factor that determines how much car insurance for a female will cost. That all important driving record counts for a lot of course but there are other less obvious factors that come into play as well.  For instance what many people do not realize is that these days their credit record can have a big impact on the amount they are likely to pay for their car insurance premiums, as can other things like education level and even occasionally work history.

Another reason car insurance for a female may be lower than it is for a man is that women tend to drive cars that are safer and less, how can we put this, ostentatious. The type of car you drive has a lot to do with your premium rate as well you see as can how safe it is. Again this is a bit of a generalization, there are plenty of women who own sports cars but it is the average picture that car insurance companies take into account.
