Getting the Lowest Car Insurance Rate Possible

Car insurance, in all but a handful of states in the US, is not only a good idea to have in case you should ever get involved in an accident, or have your vehicle stolen but is also mandated by law. So the simple fact is that if you own a car you have to have car insurance, end of story, no ifs ands or buts about it. That does not mean however that you have to pay too much for it.

One of the biggest reasons people end up spending too much to insure their vehicle and fail to get the lowest car insurance rate possible is that they do not bother to shop around. They like that little talking lizard in the TV commercial and on an whim call the number on the screen and before they know it have bought a car insurance policy that may or may not be the best one for them.

Shopping around means getting a number of different quotes form several reputable companies. When you take the time to do this (and there are plenty of online services that can help you do so quickly and fairly painlessly) you may be quite surprised by how significantly the rates can differ. The insurance company your Dad uses may be able to give him the lowest car insurance rate possible but they may not be able to do the same for you, which is why you should do a little research yourself before parting with your money.

There are certain ways you yourself can make sure that whatever company you are considering your rate is lower. For instance by increasing your deductible, which is the amount of money you pay toward an insurance claim before the insurer has to pay, can save you money on your premium. If you increase your deductible from $200 to $1000 you can be looking at cutting about 30 to 50 percent of your premium cost. Just make sure you keep that $1,000 tucked away in a savings account in case the worst does ever happen and you end up in an accident.

There are also certain things about the vehicle you are driving itself that can significantly affect how much you are charged for auto insurance. Having a car alarm or other legitimate anti-theft device installed in your car can cut your premiums, as can the presence of airbags and anti-lock brakes.

If you take a defensive driving course you can score points with the insurers and secure a lower car insurance rate as well. These classes are usually short (just a few hours) and are relatively inexpensive but just that single afternoon of your time can significantly lower your monthly car insurance premiums.

Then there is of course your driving record. Speeding tickets and other traffic violations can cost you big time, something well worth keeping in mind the next time you are tempted to put the pedal to metal a little too much to get home from work a few minutes earlier than usual.
