73How To Get Rid Of Bedbugs
It seems like today you can’t turn on the television without hearing another story about bed bugs. The diminutive creatures have descended on major cities in epic proportions, causing not only outbreaks in common places like college dorm rooms and apartment buildings, but also in high end retail stores and luxury housing. These pests have always been a part of society having mainly plagued the lower socio-economic classes, but recently have had an uncelebrated resurgence in the past few months affecting people of all walks of life. Bed bugs, have always, and will always continue to be a problem. With increased technology emerging in the field of extermination treating this epidemic can be a quick reality. Bed bugs are not only unsightly but can cause both physical and economic hardship to anyone unlucky enough to be the victim of an outbreak. The extermination of bed bugs, while achievable, can be a costly as well as time consuming experience.
So how does one become a magnet for bed bugs? The common misconception is that bed bugs are attracted to dirty cluttered places. This is partly untrue. Bed beds are actually attracted to the carbon dioxide that humans and animals exhale. The clutter may make it easier for the bed bugs to remain hidden; however, it is not the attracting force behind their infestation. Keeping a clean and orderly living situation can help improve your chance of an infestation, as the bugs will have fewer hiding spots. Continual cleaning is a great example of how to get rid of bedbugs. Vacuuming your mattress and rugs will help to eliminate any bed bug fecal matter, molted skin (like snakes bed bugs shed their outer skin which can collect in mattresses and dark spots), and dead specimens.
How To Treat Bedbugs
Nuvan Strips: This is an “at home” extermination product that works by poisoning the bed bugs, eggs and nymphs. The process works by taking the infested articles, stuffed animals, toys, clothing, blankets and putting them in a large bag with one of the Nuvan Strips. The bag is then sealed air tight leaving only the Nuvan chemicals for the bed bugs to breathe. Over a period of a few days (although the timeline differs depending on who you ask) the bed bugs will eventually be suffocated by this toxic cocktail. The items in question can them be cleaned and used as normal.
High Heat: This technique uses a high degree of heat to kill the bed bug. Typically a temperature of 120 degrees Fahrenheit or higher is needed in order to fully kill the bugs. This can be achieved by washing items in extremely hot water, or by “baking” items in specialized ovens. Obviously, given the dangers of this method, you can not use this treatment for all infected items (electronics, pets, et cetera).
Extreme Cold: This extermination technique uses extreme cold to kill the bed bugs. Exterminators are equipping themselves with tanks that spray a frozen CO2 solution onto the infected areas. This (in most cases) kills the bugs immediately leaving no discernible residue or chemical smell. This method has become more popular over the years given bed bugs increased resistance to most common pesticides. Pesticide/Chemical Treatments: Traditional pesticide treatments work well for the eradication of bed bugs. Some chemicals are more powerful than others, but you need to be careful especially around your bed, since you will likely be sleeping in it after the extermination. Popular treatments include Pyganic Dust, Phantom Aerosol, Bedlam Aerosols, and Temprid SC. If stronger chemicals are not your cup of tea, common rubbing alcohol kills bed bugs upon contact.
Where Bedbugs Lurk
An important aspect of treatment of an infestation is the complete cleaning of an infected area. Typically since bed begs will avoid light they will take umbrage in dark places. Once you diagnose your problem you will need to do a full scale cleaning of the area. You will need to dismantle your bed frame, examine your box spring, empty and clean draws, launder clothing, launder your bedding, vacuum and clean the infested area. In some extreme cases you may need to completely remove your mattress and box spring from the house and buy a new one.
If you find your self asking “How to get rid of bedbugs” hopefully some of the solutions mentioned above will help in eradicating your infestation. Try some natural remedies in tandem with some more technical exterminating tricks. With a little hope, you will be able to eradicate the problem and get back to living a normal, bug free life.
